Cousins get life for killing gogo

2012-04-16 00:00

AN Imbali man and his two cousins began a life sentence over the weekend after pleading guilty to murdering his 85-year-old grandmother.

Kwanele Mkhize (20) told the Pietermaritzburg high court that while drinking with Nkosi Zondi (18) and Msawenkosi Dalmini (19) in August last year, he suggested they kill her because of the way she had treated him and his mother.

The two others admitted taking part because Tholwaphi Flora Zondi had chased Mkhize and his mother away from her home, rendering the both of them homeless.

Armed with a pair of scissors and an iron file, they attacked the grandmother as she made a late night visit to her outside toilet.

Mkhize said in his plea statement: “I grabbed the deceased from behind her head. Dlamini and Zondi started to stab the deceased on her body.

“During this scuffle, I fell to the floor with the deceased.

“I took the file in my possession and stabbed the deceased a few times on her body. She stopped breathing and her body was motionless.”

Afterwards, they took the keys that were around her neck and opened her safe to remove R10 000.

They also took a DVD player, a laptop and kettle, which they sold.

Judge Kobus Booyens said on Friday they had cruelly killed a defenceless elderly woman in the comfort of her home.

The fact that they were family and part of the same extended family was an aggravating factor.

He then sentenced all three to life imprisonment as well as eight years for robbery.
