Cow down: Farmer sad animal had to be shot

2012-11-20 00:00

A FARMER is heartbroken after his cow, which had been stuck in a deep, narrow hole for eight days, was shot because it couldn’t be rescued.

Weekend Witness reported on Saturday that Ndabayakhe Madlala, a farmer in the Table Mountain area, was so desperate to rescue his cow, which he described as being like his child, that he was prepared to spend R15 000 on hiring a helicopter to perhaps hoist it to safety.

Unfortunately, after many failed attempts to get the cow out of the narrow hole, the only choice was to shoot it on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m feeling very bad. I was there when it was killed and had to step back because I didn’t want to see it getting shot or hear the sound,” Madlala said. Although he feels the cow was special and that it’s a great loss, he said killing it was for the best. “I think it is better now because I know that it is not hungry or thirsty.”

SPCA spokesperson Maureen Vida said: “It was a terribly difficult rescue. We had experts and we tried everything. Unfortunately, we couldn’t leave it there for much longer.”
