2014-05-28 00:00

JOSINA Beatrix, a six-year-old Holstein owned by Niel van Rensburg of Standerton, was this year’s Royal Show Gold Cup winner.

The cow was also named the senior champion and grand champion in her breed during the dairy championships, which were held at the showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on Monday and yesterday.

Van Rensburg told The Witness that he was “over the moon” with the win, adding, “It’s always lovely to come and show at the Royal.”

The supreme champion dairy animal receives a Standard Bank cash prize of R4 000, rosette and ribbon, the Royal Agricultural Society Gold Cup and a Royal Show medallion and rosette.

This year’s reserve to the supreme champion was Hotspot Nicole, from Hotspot Holsteins, who was also the reserve champion in her breed class.

Her prizes included R2 000, a rosette and ribbon from Standard Bank, the John Simpson Memorial trophy and a Royal Show rosette.

Winning the title of Super Cow 2014 was Rubicon Rocket’s Jane, an eight-year-old Jersey, owned by Arno Theron, who farms in the Karkloof.

The winning Jersey, which was earlier named the senior cow champion in her breed class, received R1 000 from Stud Book, the NCD Centenary Floating Trophy and a sash from Standard Bank.

The judge, Andrew Masterson, complimented the exhibitors on the quality of their dairy cattle, saying: “It’s a privilege to judge animals of such a high standard.”
