Cowan House host U9 festival

COWAN House Prep School in Hilton hosted the U9 Midlands Rugby Festival on Saturday with 21 teams and 250 players in action.

The teams came from Durban through to Kokstad, and the festival provides the opportunity for many of the boys to experience their first competitive rugby match against another school and the first time that many excited dads and anxious moms will get to see their boys in action in a match environment.

“Witnessing 250 energetic boys in baggy shorts, long socks and oversized gum guards playing, learning and enjoying themselves on a rugby field convinces me that sport festivals which encourage mass participation are hugely beneficial for our children. This is where it all starts,” said Cowan House sports director Neil Berndsen.

Much care is taken that these young boys’ (and parents’) initial rugby experience at this level is played in a well-controlled environment. In such an environment, rugby is a relatively safe sport that provides young boys with the opportunity to develop enormously in their self-confidence while remaining a coaching and development festival with little emphasis on results.
