Crackdown on municipal car hire

2007-11-16 00:00

Last month Haswell issued a stern warning to municipal staff who use staff vehicles for their own business, following complaints from the public and other staff members.

The municipality is currently spending approximately R300 000 per month on vehicle hire, which Haswell said is out of control and unacceptable.

In a circular issued to all council staff yesterday, Haswell said: “Therefore, with immediate effect, I am withdrawing any authority to hire municipal vehicles. I expect the full co-operation and compliance of staff and failure to comply with this instruction will constitute not only gross misconduct, but also the incurring of unauthorised expenditure, and hence possible surcharge”.

Any employee currently using a hired vehicle was yesterday requested to report to human resources, which willcancel the contract, or if it is determined that the vehicle is critical to service delivery, authorise the hire contract.

The human resources support managers will report back to Haswell on Tuesday.
