Crafty: stealthy gang bust after second hit in a day

2010-05-18 00:00

POLICE yesterday arrested three suspects who employ “sophisticated tactics” in their stealing spree as they target unsuspecting shops without using a gun, police said.

The suspects were arrested while driving from Howick where they had executed what appears to be their second hit of the day.

They left Pin Cushion store in Howick with about R1 200 after distracting the employees as they emptied the till.

Just before the Howick job, the three had left a Pietermaritzburg Hi-Q dealership confused after they “relieved” the tyre franchise of about R3 500 “in less than five minutes without using a gun,” Hi-Q manager Ronald Botha told The Witness.

Midlands police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the suspects have a regular modus operandi; they usually distract employees, drawing their attention away from the tills as one of their thieves collect the money.

Jeevan said over R4 000 was recovered when the suspects were apprehended by the Pietermaritzburg police and dog unit around 3pm while they driving along the Old Howick Road.

She said they will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court this morning on theft charges.

“They will face theft charges and not robbery because they did not use a gun,” said Jeevan.
