Craib: widow of former ‘witness’ chair dies

PAMELA Craib, widow of the former chairperson of The Witness, Desmond Craib, died on Wednesday, aged 85.

Though Craib never enjoyed a formal position within the company, she was not without influence. Her husband was always adamant the decision to appoint Richard Steyn editor in 1974, of what was then The Natal Witness, be credited to her. Steyn went on to turn a small, provincial newspaper into one of international repute.

Craib leaves five children, Iain, Patti, Stuart, Murrae Lyn and Alexandra. She was predeceased by her husband, Desmond, and a son, Gordon. Her son, Stuart, is chairperson of The Natal Witness Printing and Publishing Company.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. — Witness Reporter.
