Crash: 12 die as bakkies collide on N2

Twelve people were killed in a crash near Empangeni yesterday. Transport Department spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha said three others were critically injured.

She said the incident took place on the N2 near Empangeni at around 3 pm when two bakkies collided.

Mbatha said an Isuzu bakkie without a canopy was carrying six passengers, all of whom were killed. A Ford bakkie with a canopy had nine occupants, six of whom were killed.

She said an RTI officer who attended the scene said the tyres of the Isuzu were smooth.

The dead were four women, seven men and a boy.

In the morning, one person died and two were injured when two trucks collided on the N2 near Dokodweni, Zululand.

Near Dundee, one person died and nine were injured when a camper van lost a wheel.
