Crash: Local woman killed in gyrocopter

2008-04-30 00:00

A gyrocopter crash at the Mabalingwe game reserve at Warmbaths in Limpopo last week, claimed the life of a local woman, Lauren McCall (24).

She had been filming the area with Basie Wessels (64), owner of the reserve and pilot of the gyrocopter, when the aircraft crashed to the ground and burst into flames.

McCall was filming for the African Travel Channel at the time.

Her mother, Sheila, said McCall was on a two-week shoot in the area, making a documentary. She described her daughter as a popular girl. “She was a fun kid who lived life to the full.”

McCall was educated at Girls’ High School, and went to Varsity College before studying Video Technology at the Durban Technikon.

She was well known in show jumping and horse riding circles.

A memorial service for her will be held on Saturday (May 3) at All Saints Church, 73 Montgomery Driver at 11 am.
