Crash: Taximan talking on phone loses control after wheel mishap

2008-06-05 00:00

“To say [the driver] was speeding would be an understatement, he was literally flying,” said a passenger who was one of several flung out of a taxi when it overturned after a rear wheel came off on the N3 near Ashburton yesterday.

“What made it worse was that he was talking on his cellphone when the wheel came off. He then lost control and the taxi overturned about three times,” she told The Witness before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

A four-day-old baby who was also flung out survived uninjured, cushioned by the blanket it was wrapped in, said KZN Transport Department spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu.

All the 13 injured passengers were reported to have suffered slight and minor injuries. They were treated at different Pietermaritzburg hospitals after the accident which occurred just after midday.

The baby and the mother were taken to hospital for tests.

She added that it is believed that the driver of the minibus taxi, which was travelling from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, lost control of the vehicle after its rear right wheel came off.
