Crash: speeding driver kills two

2008-06-02 00:00

A HORRIFIC car crash in the Caluza road in Edendale left two people dead when three vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Saturday night.

The accident, which involved two VWs and a Honda Ballade, is believed to have been caused by reckless driving. Five people were seriously injured and taken to Edendale Hospital. Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said the Honda, which was speeding down Caluza Road from Sweetwaters, first hit one of the VWs and then the other.

“The second VW lost control and overturned. Its driver died,” said Mngomezulu.

Police discovered that the Honda was overloaded with six occupants. One of them, Tsutsu Gwala (about 19) was killed. The driver was arrested. It is not clear if he had a driver’s licence with him, because police could not find it.

In a separate accident, which left 13 passengers seriously injured on the Edendale Road near Taylor’s Halt, a driver fled after his bakkie was involved in a head-on collision with a minibus taxi in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police suspect drunken driving.

In an accident yesterday evening, the victim of a hit-and-run accident at the corner of Berg and Retief streets was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Witnesses said the man was walking across Retief Street when a red VW Golf hit him. After the accident, the vehicle sped down Berg Street and skipped red traffic lights.
