Crash survivor killed in crash

A WOMAN who was seriously injured in the Field’s Hill truck accident on September 12 last year was killed by a swerving vehicle in Pinetown.

Described as “strong and focused” and known for her singing voice and role in the Anglican church choir in KwaNdengezi, Pinetown, Cecelia Shabalala — using a crutch for support — was struck by a car last Thursday on Alexander Road in Pinetown.

Her death has left her family shattered having watched her fight her way back to her feet after sustaining multiple injuries after the Field’s Hill tragedy.

“If she had not been injured last year, she may have been able to escape. She may have been able to get out of the way, but she wasn’t quick enough,” said her sister Thulile Kweyama.

According to Field’s Hill Helping Hands director Karen Dreyer-Janish, a non-profit organisation set up to assist victims of what has been described as KwaZulu-Natal’s worst accident, Shabalala had been bed-ridden for several months.
