Crash: two kids hurt outside mall

2010-04-30 00:00

TWO schoolchildren were rushed to hospital following a head-on collision early yesterday between two light vehicles outside Liberty Midlands Mall, Netcare 911 said.

“It is thought that one vehicle veered across the centre median and pushed into oncoming traffic, with both vehicles coming to rest in the roadway,” Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks told The Witness.

The collision occured at the traffic circle a few metres from the mall’s gate 3.

Wicks said the two children, one from each vehicle, sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were treated and stabilised by Netcare911 paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital.

In another accident yesterday morning, a man was killed and 11 others injured — two seriously — when the minibus taxi in which they were travelling overturned on the R617 between Boston and Bulwer, Wicks said.

He said the driver lost control after a tire blow-out, which caused the taxi to overturn.

“The injured were treated and stabilised by Netcare911 paramedics at the scene before they were transported by ambulance to various hospitals and clinics.”

A case of reckless driving was opened after a Durban minibus taxi owner collided with his own taxi and injured 13 commuters in KwaMashu, north of Durban, on Wednesday night.

It is alleged that the taxi owner was driving his car when he crashed into his taxi, which was full of commuters.

Wicks said the passengers were taken to hospitals and clinics in Durban to be treated for injuries.

The taxi owner also sustained injuries. He said the taxi owner was stuck in traffic when he decided to dodge it by driving in an oncoming lane. That was when he collided with his own taxi, driven by his employee.
