A CRITICALLY injured 40-year-old man with severely broken legs was trapped in his car for 12 hours after it crashed down an embankment on the N3 in Peacevale on Saturday evening.

ER24’s Vanessa Jackson said that when paramedics arrived at the scene the man was sitting in the driver’s seat the car with his legs trapped.

“Although he had severe breaks to both his legs, he was alert and oriented and told his rescuers what had happened and how long he had been waiting for help to arrive.

“Paramedics struggled for almost 90 minutes to free him and get him up the 20-metre embankment to where the ambulance was waiting.

“They stabilised his broken limbs, gave him pain medication and took him to Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban,” she said.

Jackson said it is believed that the accident happened around 11 pm on Saturday evening, but paramedics and rescue services were only notified of the incident at about 10 am the following day.

“A woman was allegedly in the car at the time; the relationship to the driver is at this stage unknown. She managed to climb from the wreckage, with only minor scrapes and bruises, and walked to the nearest police station to call for help. Paramedics on the scene said that the nearest location to call for help must be almost 10 kilometres from where the accident happened,” said Jackson.

She added that the cause of the accident will be investigated, as well as the whereabouts of the female passenger who reported the accident.
