Crashes: Baby killed near Estcourt

2008-07-13 00:00

A 10-month-old baby was killed when the driver of a bakkie lost control of his vehicle on the N3 near Wagendrift Dam at Estcourt yesterday morning.

Transport Department spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

“The vehicle was found wrapped around a tree. Four adults were critically injured and four others seriously injured.”

The bakkie was en route from Pietermaritzburg to Harrismith.

In another incident yesterday, a woman motorcyclist was taken to hospital in a serious condition after a head-on collision with a car on the Richmond road near Andersons Garage.

On Saturday, rescue workers faced a grisly scene after a hit-and-run accident at Cedara.

Mngomezulu said the victim was walking on the N3 when he was struck by a vehicle.

His leg was amputated in the accident. Emergency services later found the part of his leg 50 metres from the point of impact.
