Crashes: Three killed as three vehicles collide

THREE people died and two others were seriously injured when three cars collided late on Sunday night near Elandskop, outside Pietermaritzburg.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said one vehicle was torn in half and the other two had “extensive damage”.

ER24 and EMRS rescue workers found that two men and a woman had been thrown out of the vehicles. They were declared dead at the scene.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a Toyota Venture was trying to overtake a metered taxi and collided with an oncoming Opel Kadett. The taxi then collided with the other vehicle.

The driver of the Opel, Thulani Mkhize (about 25),and his passenger, Zamokuhle Mbola (23), were killed.

A second passenger in the Opel is in a critical condition, Banks said. The passenger in the Toyota was killed. The person’s name is still unknown, Zwane said. A person in the metered taxi sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the Toyota fled before rescue workers and police arrived.

Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said three counts of culpable homicide have been opened.

On the N3 yesterday afternoon two men were severely injured when they were thrown from a car as it rolled. One died on the way to hospital. Chris Botha of Netcare 911 reported that the Toyota Corolla in which they were travelling landed upside down in a stormwater drain between Nottingham Road and Mooi River. The two occupants were both placed on manual ventilators at the scene.

The surviving man was admitted to Grey’s Hospital.
