Craven Week Rugby

2013-07-13 00:00

THE 50th Anniversary of the Coca-Cola Craven Week will be brought to a close today when Western Province and the Golden Lions meet in the final game of the tournament, the main game of the last day, which has become known as the unofficial title game of the event.

There is no official champion of Craven Week, as it is purely a festival of rugby, but everyone knows that, in most years, the two top sides are given the honour of playing in the last game. Most of the SA Schools players who are eventually selected usually come from these two teams.

Western Province has played in the main game more times than any other team, with 22 final appearances. The Free State is next with 17, followed by the Golden Lions with 12 appearances. This is the third consecutive year that the Lions have been in the final game.

The list of the winners of the main game is also headed by Western Province with 11, three in the last 10 years, followed by the Free State with eight and the Blue Bulls with six.

Despite KZN losing both games, they have managed to secure a game on the main stadium this morning, where they will play Border.

C Field: 9:15 Border CD vs Griquas, 10.45 Griquas Country vs Leopards.

B Field: 9:15 Limpopo Blue Bulls vs EP Country, 10:45 Griffons vs Boland, 12:15 E Province vs Valke.

A Field: 9:15 Zimbabwe vs Namibia, 10:45 Border vs KwaZulu-Natal, 12:15 Blue Bulls vs SWD, 1.45 Free State vs Pumas, 3.15 Golden Lions vs Western Province.
