Craven Week U18 final to be televised

2010-07-03 00:00

THE coveted final match of the Craven Week U18 rugby tournament in Welkom will be between Free State and Western Province at 1.15 pm today.

It will be televised live from 1 pm on M-Net and SuperSport 1, and should be well worth a look. Both sides are unbeaten and have played the week’s most consistent, effective and attractive rugby.

For captain and No. 8 Guy Alexander’s quality KZN side it was a case of close but no cigar for that precious final match, but as coach Tony Richter told Weekend Witness yesterday, playing in the curtain-raiser against Boland at 11.45 am is something to be pleased with. However, according to SuperSport’s TV schedule as of yesterday, it won’t be televised.

“It would have been nice to have the main game against Western Province, though,” said Richter.

Indeed, it could have so easily been the case had a couple of things gone KZN’s way in Thursday’s crucial 30-20 defeat at the hands of a very good Free State squad.

“Inside centre Patrick Howard’s magnificent try got us back in the game trailing 15-13, but unfortunately flyhalf Duncan Campbell’s reliable boot deserted him and four easy penalties by his standards went wide,” said Richter.

The SA Schools’ and SA Academy teams will be announced later today. The selection panel, including Kevin Smith, who coached the Kearsney first XV and KZN U18, will no doubt be seriously considering Alexander and Howard, along with a number of their provincial team-mates, like Khaya Majola.
