Craven Week draws to a close

2014-07-04 00:00

THE U13 Coca Cola Craven Week draws to a close today with the finals day’s play taking place at King’s Park Stadium.

The honour of playing in the last game of the day — the week’s unofficial final — has gone to Western Province and Border

They were two of three teams to come through their earlier three games unbeaten. The Leopards, following their 34-15 win over the hosts, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday, also won three out of three.

Western Province beat Boland 31-5. Boland gave their neighbours a tough contest and Province were only 10-0 up at the break. They took firm control as the game progressed, however, and ran in three tries in the last 10 minutes to run out comfortable winners. Andre Bester scored a hat trick of tries for the winners, with Fabrizo Lennert and Meiring Ebersohn getting the others.

Border produced the turn-around of the week when they beat Eastern Province 24-13 in the final game of the day. EP led 13-0 at the break and it stayed that way for the first 10 minutes of the second half. It was all Border after that and they ran in four tries without reply to end EP’s unbeaten run and book themselves a place in tomorrow’s unofficial final.

WP and Border were the most impressive sides on the opening day of the week and they continued to play the most attractive rugby throughout. Their clash tomorrow, at King’s Park, is going to be a thriller.

EP’s tries were scored by Ayabulela Bulemo and Siyathanda Hallom. Borde’s tries all came from their speedy back. Luwaka Bata, Mntungwa Mapantsula, Olitha Maya and Siposiso Javu all got on the scoreboard for them.

The Valke and the Limpopo Blue Bulls combined to put on an exciting spectacle that ended in a 10-all draw. They showed, in the process, that rugby is alive and well at this level in the smaller SA Rugby unions.

Earlier in the day, the Golden Lions ended SWD’s unbeaten run, beating them 12-10 in a very tight encounter. The teams scored two tries apiece and it was a conversion kicked from the touchline by Jo Olivier that clinched the victory for them.
