Craven Week teams revealed by selectors

2011-05-28 00:00

AFTER fairly lengthy deliberations, the selectors released the names of the U18 and U16 players who will represent their province in one of the tournaments during the mid-year vacation.

Have there ever been three brothers in one team representing their province? The Du Preez brothers from Kearsney, sons of former Springbok scrumhalf Robert, have all been selected for the KZN Craven Week team. There are two other Kearsney boys in the team, but it is Glenwood that provide the bulk of the 22-man team.

Of the 66 players chosen for the Craven Week team plus the two academy sides, 44 come from the most successful rugby-playing schools in the province this year. Glenwood, who have 18 players, Maritzburg College with 10 and eight each from Kearsney and Westville.

The U16 Grant Khomo team of 22 have19 players from the four top schools. The selectors have also named a B team which will play one game against their counterparts from the Pumas. The other five teams will also be in action as a warm-up for the tournaments against the Pumas, with all games at Glenwood on June 16.

The Craven Week team does have some experience with two players Niel Oelofse (Glenwood) and Mbembi Payi (DHS) at their second Craven week. A further three players, Ferdi Horn and Dean Moolman, both from Glenwood and S. Nanto from George Campbell were in the Academy A side last year. Stefan Ungerer and Lwazi Sithole, both from Maritzburg College, played for the Academy B team in 2010.
