Crazy cow injures two people at the Royal Show

2013-05-28 00:00

A COW broke loose from its pen at the Royal Show on Sunday evening and caused havoc as it ran through the crowd, injuring two people.

The cow ran through the fun fair, eastern bazaar and was finally cornered at the Msunduzi Fire Department stand, where it took three tranquillisers to calm it down.

Terence Galloway of Waterfall was knocked over by the cow, and said he suffered a sprained hand and major tissue damage.

“I was minding my own business ... when a [cow] went on the rampage, got out of its enclosure and ran through all the visitors … I was caught in its path, with it charging into my right side and tossing me on my back like a rag doll.

“It was as if I weighed nothing,” said Galloway.

He later had X-rays at Northdale Hospital, which confirmed there were no major spinal injuries or internal bleeding.

Another person was reportedly also injured by the crazed cow and broke their wrist in the chaos. They were treated on-site by ER24 staff.

CEO of the Royal Agricultural Society Terry Strachan said: “The cow that got loose was a young heifer. It ran through the crowd, but we managed to capture and sedate it. It is unfortunate that one person broke their wrist and another was knocked down, but luckily there were no serious injuries.”

The runaway cow was back in its enclosure yesterday, where it was apparently still causing a bit of trouble for its handlers.
