‘Crazy ninja’ to appear in court today

2014-02-06 00:00

THE man who went on a rampage in the Pietermaritzburg city centre on Tuesday is set to appear in court today.

The man, dubbed the “crazy ninja” by some onlookers, attacked cars belonging to police and civilians, and chased people with his home-made nunchucks and a knobkerrie.

Police have asked that anyone who was injured, or whose car was damaged in the attack, contact Detective-Lieutenant Siphiwe Gwala at 033 845 2743 or 072 025 8817.

“The man brandishing a knobkerrie and a set of home-made nunchucks at passing pedestrians and vehicles is expected to appear in court for attempted murder, malicious damage to property and assault,” said Zwane.

The man is alleged to have stood in the middle of the road before producing his nunchucks and knobkerrie and performing what was described as “ninja tricks”.

He then allegedly went up to a paramedic vehicle and appears to wipe the glass on the car, before approaching an Amarok vehicle which he beat.

Police said on Tuesday they believed the man was “allegedly mentally disturbed”.

They were later forced to shoot him in the leg to stop him when he tried to attack a police officer.
