Creating a balance in life

2008-11-04 00:00

An idle mind is the devil’s playground, they say, but are there no exceptions? It is true that some people are lazy and would rather do nothing than work or even play. However, doing nothing can be the most productive thing you can do, especially if you do it at least once daily.

If you spend all your other time working, physically, spiritually or mentally you may find yourself sickly in the future or susceptible to illness. A good example is that of cellphones. We all know that a cellphone needs to have its battery charged at some point and the more it is used the sooner it needs to be charged.

A phrase used to describe down time that illustrates the point is the “peace moment”. Now, the peace moment can be anything from shopping to having a cup of tea, sitting on a rocking chair, meditating and even smoking. Some churches have an event on their calender where the “mothers’ union” goes off and sits in silence in a church building. Prayer is certainly one way of finding peace. Two religious examples of that are Ramadan for those who practice Islam and Lent for those who are Christian.

You get a chance to sort your thoughts out and even to find resolutions to troubling issues in your life. With all the stress of today it is very important to have this moment as often as possible. There are endless ways of doing it but there are people who do not respect this need to isolate oneself and ponder on things. These people are the kind who cannot appreciate that people have different levels of stress in their life and thus have different ways of resting.

It is a fact that some friends or family members tend to think that it is about them when a loved one does not want to talk to or see them. Overachievers experience this problem. People living in the same household will have clashing energy at times and must spend time apart lest they get on each other’s nerves. It is especially vital to have a peace moment if you argue with your spouse.

The antithesis of a peace moment must be an activity such as sport where one releases all one’s aggression. Even then, once the adrenaline stops pumping after a match, that moment to catch one’s breath is vital for creating a balance. The point is that in this day and age, life is one big triathlon where we are juggling multiple responsibilities and acquiring skills to stay ahead in the race. We are so busy chasing dreams that we do not rest and although this can’t be the only cause of the many stress-related diseases, it certainly is a factor.

There is no real trick to having a peace moment. If you are very busy you can do it on the way to your car, which I recommend you park far enough away so that you have a decent walk to it. That moment is vital, as short as it may be.

Take time out to be by yourself, whatever it is that you do. This way, better decisions will be made thus increasing your success in such a way that all your winnings are not spent on doctors trying to repair the damage you did to yourself. Like an apple a day, the peace moment also keeps the doctor away.
