Creating a home for jazz on the North Coast

2012-11-14 00:00

THE uThungulu Jazz and Entertainment Club wants to put the district on the map as a jazz performance destination.

This Sunday, the club will be hosting two jazz outfits at the Dumami Lodge, Turnbull Street, Empangeni.

The visiting artists will be the all-female Durban jazz group Heels over Head, as well as the jazz infusion group Tapfuma, also from Durban.

Club chairperson Nhlanhla Jili said it was no secret that most Zululanders liked jazz, stating he has spotted them at “jazz events across the country”.

“Whenever I travel to jazz festivals in Pietermarizburg, Durban, Cape Town or the South Coast, I see people who live here attending the events, so it was inevitable that we would eventually think about having an event right here,” said Jili.

The club’s sights are set on September 2013 to host an international jazz event right in Zululand’s backyard.

“There are so many good jazz artists in South Africa, within this province and locally. Our intention is to stage an international event late in 2013 and we hope we can use this platform to promote our own home-grown talent,” said Jili.

The club is currently working with the Umfolozi Casino inEmpangeni in a bid to host an event on December 16.

“We partnered with the casino on 23 September for a festival and it was a great success. I can assure you this next event is not be missed,” said Jili.

Sunday’s event will start at 11 am.
