Creston’s ‘hot boxes’ raise R5?600 for rhino

CRESTON College pupils have done their bit for the fight against rhino poaching.

The eco-school, situated on the South Coast, raised R5 600 through a fundraiser and donated the money to KwaZulu-Natal Rhino Watch.

Last year was International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, and the school initiated a “hot box” project as part of the theme.

Speaking to The Witness, principal Phillip Hawke said the pupils and their parents put the hot boxes together.

The boxes use various materials to insulate pots that have been heated up to the point of cooking, and enable the food to be cooked without applying further heat.

The school’s pupils sold 100 boxes, which are used to reduce energy consumption in homes.

Hawke said: “Last year the public became aware of what was happening with rhinos,” and that the Creston College pupils wanted to help.

While this was a fundraising exercise, the children also learned about sustainable energy, he added.

Hawke said he knew the money would be used well because KZN Rhino Watch was passionate about its objectives.
