Crews battle to free N3 crash victims

2009-11-11 00:00

AN unidentified man was killed and another critically injured in a truck accident on the N3 near Chatterton Road yesterday evening.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said details surrounding the cause of the accident were sketchy. However, he did not rule out the wet weather as a contributing factor.

The truck was carrying blankets and was headed towards Durban when it overturned. The dead man lay mangled beneath the truck, while the critically injured man was trapped in the wreckage.

A third man, who is believed to have been in the truck, suffered minor injuries. “At this stage we can’t tell who’s who, as the scene was chaotic. But we believe that all the three men were in the truck,” Banks said.

Paramedics and fire department rescue crews worked tirelessly trying to extricate the deceased and the seriously injured man with the jaws of life.

In other accidents yesterday, two elderly women were injured when their Fiat Uno struck a lamp post along Mayor’s Walk, and two men were seriously injured when their cars collided head on along Old Howick Road. All four were taken to local hospitals.
