Cricket: KZN Dolphins’ trip to India postponed

2008-11-27 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins’ tour to India for the inaugural Champions League cricket tournament has been postponed.

Dolphins CEO Cassim Docrat told The Witness yesterday the organisers had informed him that, due to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and consequent security concerns, the tournament had been put off until at least next year.

The lucrative Twenty20 event scheduled from December 3 to 10 in Mumbai and other Indian cities and boasting the biggest prize-money ever at this level of the game was to feature provincial teams from the hosts, Australia, England, Pakistan and SA’s Dolphins and the Northern Titans from Pretoria.

Two Proteas, captain Graeme Smith and fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, were also contracted to play for Indian Premier League sides the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings respectively.

Docrat said he had met the Dolphins players yesterday afternoon.

“The guys were very disappointed that the trip had been called off, but at the same time they understand the security concerns.”

The Dolphins were due to fly to Mumbai tomorrow morning en route to Bangalore.
