Cricket: KZN derby starts today at Oval

2011-02-10 00:00

THE long-awaited KZN cricket derby between Inland and Coastal takes place at the Maritzburg Oval from today to Sunday.

The Provincial Three-Day Challenge match sees ninth-placed Inland needing a great performance against what is a strong Coastal line-up, despite being in 12th place on the 14-team log.

Coastal captain Khaya Zondo made a ton for Pinetown at the weekend, and in the likes of Matthew Hulett, Divan van Wyk and wicketkeeper/batsman Bradley Barnes he has some heavy run-scorers.

The Inland bowlers will need to be at the top of their game against Provincial Challenge batting of this calibre.

Coastal’s Byron Whatmore, Abdul Razak and Vyash Gobind are no slouches with the ball either, and it is just as well that Inland skipper Kyle Nipper and a couple of others got runs in club cricket at the weekend.

Coastal are arguably the favourites in Sunday’s 40-over bash. They lie in fifth place compared to Inland’s 13th and once again it will take a solid all-round effort by the Inland lads to upset the favourites.

KZN Coastal (from): Khaya Zondo (capt), Cody Chetty, Matthew Hulett, Bradley Barnes, Abdul Haq Razak, Keagan Eccles, Byron Whatmore, Nashen Govender, Divan van Wyk, Michael Alexander, Kushen Kishun, Sumanth Sunkari, Vyash Gobind, Brendon Young.

The Inland side was not available at the time of going to press.
