Cricket: KwaZulu-Natal sides fail to shine in wet conditions

2010-12-18 00:00

THE U15 National Week in Port Elizabeth saw all games washed out by rain on Thursday, while in Potchefstroom, the Standard Bank U13 Week, playing their last matches, were curtailed by a late start due to overnight rain.

Neither of the KZN sides played particularly well in their final match of the week.

KZN Inland’s batting has let them down again and on Thursday, after electing to bat, reached 124 for eight after the allotted 33 overs. This was better than their last two matches, but again when they tried to increase the rate towards the end, they lost quick wickets. Matthew Wessels coming on as the ninth bowler, took four wickets for four runs in four overs. If it had not been for a patient 58 in 88 balls by Bryce Tullis (Merchiston) the Inland total would again have been very poor.

The Inland bowling was steady but they could not make early inroads and the Griqualand West opening batsmen put on 70 runs for the first wicket in 106 balls. The foundation was there and although the wickets then fell at regular intervals, it took Griquas just short of 29 overs to hit the winning runs. Daniel Hitschowitz (Cordwalles) was the best of the bowlers taking two wickets for 23 in seven overs of the five wickets that fell.

Coastals had a tough game against Gauteng and they also elected to bat. Only Tyron Koen (Kloof) was at the crease for a lengthy period in making 35, as they were bowled out in the 33rd over for 126.

Tony de Zorzi wanted the game over early as he made an undefeated 78 in 69 balls to take Gauteng to a seven-wicket win. This they achieved in the 25th over.

U13 (limited overs): KZN Inland 124-8 (B. Tullis 58, M. Wessels 4/4); Griqualand West 125-5 (W. Victor 45, R. Rossouw 26*). Griquas won by five wickets

KZN Coastals 126 (T. Koen 35, B. Skwashu 3/15, M. Saloojee 3/26); Gauteng 129-3 (T. Blackie-Roden 25, T. de Zorzi 78*). Gauteng won by seven wickets.
