Cricket: Morgan names well-balanced Inland team to take on Northerns at Maritzburg Oval

2013-02-21 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland head coach, Grant Morgan, has named a well-balanced team to take on Northerns in CSA Provincial Competition matches at the Maritzburg Oval at the weekend.

The side is boosted by the inclusion of Dolphins top-order batsman Divan van Wyk, whose success for the Inland team in the course of this season has brought Morgan many smiles.

Inland kick off the weekend with a three-day match, which starts at 9 am today. The T20 encounter is to be played on Sunday.

All things considered, the home team have fared reasonably well this season. They started off as a makeshift squad with a new head coach who did not have much time to get all his ducks in a row.

Indications are that the hard work put in this season will begin to bear fruit at the end of the year.

Inland lie in 12th place on the 14-team log table in the three-day competition. They are in 10th place in the T20 competition.

Significantly, captain Kyle Nipper’s men are within seven log points of the four teams above them on the three-day log. A win against 11th-placed Northerns could see their fortunes improve considerably.

This is the last weekend of action for the Inland lads before a fortnight’s break. The remaining three rounds are all away matches. They are against North West from March 14, Griquas from March 21 and Easterns from April 4.

Meanwhile, KZN Coastal have named a strong team to face North West at Chatsworth from today.

KZN TEAMS

Inland: Divan van Wyk, Nic Hendrie, SJ Erwee, Bradley Moses, Mathew Hulett, Kyle Nipper (capt), Abram Ndhlovu, Ruhan Pretorius, Brady Barends, Tabraiz Shamsi, Sinethemba Mjekula, and Mbasa Gqadushe.

Coastal (from): Imraan Khan, Mishkal Ramsaroop, Michael Alexander, Ahmed Alma, Nash Govender, Calvin Savage, Matthew Booth, Kyle Buckthorpe, Dane Paterson, Brandon Scullard, Mthokozisi Shezi, Chad Bowes (capt), Kushen Kishun, and Kyle Buckthorpe.
