Cricket: Schools’ league begins

2012-01-23 00:00

THE Sunfoil Schools Day/Night league starts today at 3.30 pm on the Maritzburg Oval, after the launching last week, when Yunus Bhamjee’s XI lost against Faeez Jaffer’s XI in a T20 game.

The first match today is between St Charles and Maritzburg College. St Charles did not play on Saturday as five of their players were involved with the Inland U19 side in a three-day game. This is very different to the 40-over game in this league. They have not played as a team since the Grey College Festival over two weeks ago.

College have not looked as impressive as they have been in the past few years which should make this game a good contest.

There are three further matches this week which will see the President’s XI, where 21 players from the second tier schools in the midlands have been selected for their matches, play against Michaelhouse and Hilton tomorrow and Wednesday respectively. Michaelhouse and College will also play two games each as they play one another on Thursday.

The President’s XI traditionally has a tough time against the top tier schools, but they will undoubtedly give of their best and could cause an upset. Michaelhouse, on the evidence so far this year, will be a side to target for the President’s XI.

On Thursday, College should have the better of the boys from Balgowan.

For those who enjoy schoolboy cricket, the Oval is the place to be to see the best of school cricketers in the midlands.
