Cricket: Standard club in nationals

2011-04-06 00:00

THE Standard Cricket Club first XI have qualified for the National Club Cricket Championships in Pretoria, writes JONATHAN COOK.

Captain Kyle Nipper’s squad beat South Western Districts’ club champions Union Stars by seven wickets with seven overs in hand in the playoff match in George last week.

Marcel Frentzel wrecked Stars’ hopes of posting a formidable total in their 40 overs with his four for 21 off seven overs as the SWD champs were restricted to 176 for eight.

Nipper’s slow left-arm orthodox deliveries stymied the Stars’ batsmen and his eight overs cost a measly 17 runs.

Devon Conway played for the KZN Inland Premier 40 title winners. The St John’s, Johannesburg, product was supported by top-order batsman Robin Elliot’s innings of 24.

Union Stars 176 for 8 (Marcel Frenzel 4 for 21). Standard 177 for 3 (Devon Conway 123*). Std won by 7 wkts with 7 overs to spare.
