Cricket development tournament for township schools launched

2008-06-30 00:00

As part of the development of township cricket, the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, together with Willowton Oil, have initiated a Sunfoil Township Tournament where a cricket culture can be established and promising future stars can be identified.

Shoaib Moosa, marketing and sales director of Pietermaritzburg-based Willowton Oil, commented that this sponsorship is part of its ongoing relationship with the KZN Cricket Union.

“We are confident that the Township Tournament will unlock some of the future cricketing stars of our province and country,” said Moosa.

The aim of the Township Tournament is to promote the game of cricket and to identify quality cricketers from the masses.

The ultimate goal will then be to introduce them to an advanced coaching programme for them to perfect their skills and to be selected to represent their province.

The Township XI teams will be chosen from this tournament. One team will represent players under 13 years of age (primary) and the other will represent players who are under 18 years of age (high school). The Township XI teams will compete against traditional cricketing schools in the future.

The Township Tournament will take place from Sunday at three fields S.L. Singh, Newlands Oval and KwaMashu.

Townships that will be taking part are KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Lindelani, Chesterville, Kwadabeka, Lamontville, Ndengezi/St Wendolins, Inanda, Hammarsdale, Mpumalanga/Albert Park Juniors, Kwamakhutha Folweni, Umlazi and Ngonyameni.
