Crime: Gunmen rob two city petrol stations

2008-06-30 00:00

GUNMEN targeted two petrol stations in the city, and made off with an undisclosed amount of money yesterday morning and on Sunday night.

Yesterday four men, two of them armed, confronted Dereck Mbuso Gwala, manager of Pinewood Service Station in Church Street, at 5.30 am. He had just arrived to open the business when the men demanded the safe keys from him, before removing the money.

This incident followed a robbery at Haffejee’s service station at the corner of Church and East streets late on Sunday afternoon, when five men, also armed with handguns, held up staff members who were preparing to close the business. They also made off with money.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said that in both incidents there were no gunshots and injuries.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that these incidents could be linked,” said Budhram.
