Crime: Man in court over rare copies of ‘Witness’

2008-07-09 00:00

A 26-year-old Newholmes resident, Nash Reddy, appeared in Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday charged with theft from the Msunduzi Municipal Library and possession of stolen property.

Chetty’s court appearance relates to the alleged sale of bound volumes of 19th century copies of The Witness to a city antiques dealer. The newspapers were allegedly removed from the library, which is undergoing a multi-million rand revamp.

The Witness carried a story yesterday on how a civic-minded citizen spotted the rare copies of the newspaper in the antique shop. He alerted a relative who works at The Witness. Chetty is out on bail and has been remanded to July 24.
