2008-06-08 00:00

A KNIFE-wielding robber was shot and wounded by police after he robbed and stabbed an elderly man in the city centre on Saturday.

Two SAPS officers were on patrol when they noticed a scuffle between two people at the corner of Pietermaritz and Boshoff streets.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the officers went to investigate and found that a robbery was taking place. The elderly man had been stabbed by the robber.

When the police intervened the suspect ran and one of the officers gave chase.

“When they reached the corner of Church and Boshoff streets, the robber was apprehended and in an attempt to break loose and escape, he produced a knife and attacked the officer.”

The officer shot the suspect in the leg. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition under police guard.

The elderly victim was also taken to hospital by ambulance. Investigations are continuing.

• Meanwhile, a service station in Boshoff Street was held up on Saturday evening by three heavily-armed men. They robbed the cashier at gunpoint before making away with an undisclosed amount of money. No shots were fired and there were no injuries reported. Investigations are continuing.
