Crime: rape suspect released on warning

2011-11-08 00:00

A 24-YEAR-OLD man charged with house-breaking, robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape of a 54-year-old woman in Scottsville on October 25 was released on warning by a Pietermaritzburg magistrate yesterday after the prosecutor indicated that the state does not have a strong case against him.

The man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charges, is from the Copesville area.

He is charged with breaking into the woman’s house at night and robbing her of a laptop and two cellphones.

The state alleges that the accused “wielded a firearm” and tied up the victim during the incident.

The case was postponed to November 30 for further investigation.
