Crime sms service to roll out in city soon

2007-11-16 00:00

Safe City CEO Nutan Bhika said the service is expected to be launched on December 1. Safe City has installed software at their camera control centre that will give control room staff access to SMSes about criminal activity.

“We are proud to say that this SMS service has been welcomed and has the full support of the SAPS. The control room staff who monitor criminal activity on our cameras have been fully trained on how the SMS programme will function,” said Bhika.

At a meeting of the Msunduzi council's Executive Committee (Exco) yesterday, Bhika asked that the municipal manager and the mayor be the first to enter the SMS number on their cellphones to set an example for the rest of the city.

Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo praised Safe City for the work they have done in ensuring the safety of citizens and lauded the SMS programme.

Said said it “will fit nicely with the 16 Days of Activism on Violence Against Women and Children campaign. It will give us something exciting to bring to the public to say we are doing something about reducing crime in the city.

“This is a positive move made by Safe City to combat crime. Thank you for all the work you are doing,” said the mayor.
