Croc attack victim ‘not drunk’

2014-12-06 00:00

MBOMBELA (Nelspruit) — “Jacques wasn’t drunk. He just made a stupid mistake.”

This was the comment yesterday of Suzelle Wilson (29), the girlfriend of Jacques van der Sandt (29), who was killed by a crocodile on Wednesday night. She was not present at the time.

“I think he made a stupid decision that cost him his life …”

Van der Sandt was caught by the crocodile while diving in a dam on the Skukuza golf course in the Kruger National Park.

Van der Sandt, a professional diver, challenged a friend, Jason Donaldson (26), to see who could retrieve the most golf balls from the hazard next to the ninth hole. They had been at the clubhouse following a round of golf.

A police spokesperson said Van der Sandt kept urging that they should stay in the water to get more balls, and was grabbed by the crocodile. He drowned after it pulled him under the water.
