Cronje improves 1?500?m national record

2013-09-11 00:00

JOHAN Cronje further improved the SA 1 500 m record on Sunday, finishing second to world champion Silas Kiplagat in Rieti, Italy in a time of 3:31,93.

Cronje had beaten Johan Landsman’s 3:33,56 in Doha at the start of the Diamond League series, and his latest performance even exceeded Sydney Maree’s 3:32,30 set in 1981 in Hamburg.

This comes on the back of a personal best of 1:45,64 in the 800 m set in Berlin the week before.

It was also a good meeting for Caster Semenya, who gave an indication of what could have been when she won the women’s double-lapper in 1:58,92, setting her season’s best, under the two- minute mark for the first time.

Semenya, who started the season late due to injury, has improved with every major outing, but failed to qualify in time for the World Championships.

• Another track runner made headlines at the weekend with Mapaseka Makhanya completing her domination across a wide diversity of distances, winning the Gauteng marathon in a time of two hours 37 minutes and six seconds. This was Makhanya’s debut in the 42 km distance, but continues an amazing year that has seen the Soweto-based athlete win the 1 500 m, and 5 000 m national championships and dominate the Spar Women’s 10 km challenge. She has now set the second fastest women’s marathon time of the year.

• Jenna Challenor was the clear winner in The Witness Spar 10 km Women’s challenge in 35:24, well clear of defending champion Poppy Mlambo, who won the race for minor placings against Savages Makhosazane Mhlongo, who completed the podium in 39:03.

• Locally on Saturday, Biggarsberg host their annual Mpati Mountain race starting at 2 pm from Dundee Junior School Grounds. Ken Vorster has more details of this 21 km challenge on 082 821 8004. There will also be a five-kilometre run and walk for those looking for something less taxing.

• On the outskirts of kwaMashu, Inanda Qadi are listed as hosting their Umgubho 15 km run and walk from Bridge City at 7 am on Saturday. Sibusiso Mlambo has the details on 083 685 4621.

• The final race for the weekend is the SAPS Striders 15 km Heritage Challenge, which is held around a flat fast course from King’s Park stadium at 6.30 am on Sunday. This always proves to be a popular event and runners are advised to arrive early for registration. VG Naidoo has the details on 082 418 0743.

• Runners need to note that the dates for many events are incorrect on the KZNA web site and runners need to confirm details with the office or race organisers.
