‘Crooks’ shot while trying to rob guards

2010-02-03 00:00

TWO suspects who tried to rob court security guards at Himeville are under police guard in an unnamed hospital after they were shot by the security guards on Monday morning.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the two entered the security guard house at Himeville Court, at about 2 am, and held two guards up with a gun.

One of the guards drew his firearm and shot at the suspects, hitting them both in the legs.

Zwane said the suspected crooks escaped to a getaway car, which had three occupants.

Fifty metres down the road, the getaway car hit a ditch and stalled.

The three occupants of the car ran away with one of the injured men.

The police, who had been summoned, arrested one of the injured suspects near the car. A search ensued for the other suspects.

The second injured man was found hiding in a house in the area and was also arrested.

Zwane said the two will be charged with attempted robbery.

“They could not be charged for the gun because when they were arrested it could not be found in their possession. It could have been taken by the other three suspects,” said Zwane, adding that police are searching for the others.

The two in hospital will appear in court once their injuries are healed.
