Crowning: Family marks King’s 40th celebration

2011-12-05 00:00

ABOUT 500 members of the Zulu Royal family celebrated the fortieth anniversary of King Goodwill Zwelithini’s coronation in 1971 at kwaKhethomthandayo palace in Nongoma yesterday.

Spokesperson for the royal family, prince Mbonisi Zulu, confirmed that the Saturday’s function was an exclusive event for Royal family members only.

“The princes and princesses came and paid tribute to the king and also affirmed him as the … head to all royal houses. We were also wishing him many more prosperous years as the ruler of KwaZulu-Natal,” Zulu said.

As the king will host the uMkhosi woSelwa (First Fruit) ceremony next weekend, Zulu said the king will remain in seclusion until he meets the amabutho (warriors) and the nation.

“During the function the king will also host visiting traditional leaders … to, among other things, discuss the success of the king’s revival of the circumcision ritual among his people.”
