Crucial double-header this weekend for bubbling Dolphins

THE KZN Dolphins face a crucial double-header in the MTN40 Championship this weekend, starting with their clash against the Lions at the Wanderers tonight.

Despite a mixed bag of two wins and two losses in the competition, the KZN outfit is handily placed to make the semi-finals from their pool.

While they have been up and down, the Cobras have been abysmal, so the Dolphins now find themselves within touching distance of the final four.

“We have had mixed fortunes, but it was good for us that the Cobras lost to the Knights the other night,” coach Graham Ford told The Witness last night.

Ford admits that his predominantly young charges have a long way to go yet, but he has been encouraged by the spirit within the camp.

“You know, it is one of the hardest things to keep morale going when you have so many keen players wanting a game,” he explained.

“But the guys have really been good in that sense, because I think they can see where we are trying to go with this,” he said.

A new addition to the Dolphins project is Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who will square off against his former employers tonight.

The hard-hitting leftie made the move last week, and Ford last night confirmed that he will be available to face the Lions tonight.

“Vaughn, despite being 25, brings a wealth of experience to the side,” he said.

The Dolphins had a deal to sign him for next season, but the Protea-capped batsman then fell out with the Lions, hence his hasty move to Durban.

“When it became apparent that he was available straight away, we were obviously very keen to bring him down,” Ford continued.

With Van Jaarsveld in tow, and now David Miller returning to the fold, the Dolphins look a potent batting unit.

“It’s quite a promising line-up, and obviously we were very chuffed to see “Bozza” [Loots Bosman] and “Immy” [skipper Imraan Khan] do so well in Maritzburg last Sunday,” Ford said.

The Dolphins minder also expressed his delight at how hard the rest of the squad was working.

“There is a definite buzz at the moment, and the key is to keep that going.”

But for now, the Dolphins will be looking to reverse their loss to the Lions 10 days ago, before heading to Paarl to face the Cobras on Sunday.

The Lions have lost Alviro Pietersen and Paul Harris to the Test side, but they will still provide a stern test at the Bullring.
