Crusaders outplay Impi upfront

2013-04-30 00:00

THE University of KZN Impi were outplayed in the set-pieces and lost their first match of the KZN Premier Division season 16-11 against a dominant Northwood Crusaders in Durban North on Saturday.

The Impi led 8-6 at half-time, and although they had enough opportunities to win the match, the Crusaders’ scrums, lineouts and kick-offs were superior enough to lay the platform for a hard-fought victory.

A possible 14 points with the boot were lost by the Impi, flyhalf Carl Meyer putting three penalties and a conversion just wide or just under, while the students opted to kick for the corner rather than at goal with 12 minutes left.

Crusaders’ centre Wesley Dunlop, fresh from Tuks and the Varsity Cup, missed one penalty and kicked three, plus a conversion for a match-winning 11 points.

The Durban side could well have scored more than just the one try, but Impi inside centre Gareth Meikle made two big tackles and fullback Brandon Bailey one to stop those attacks in their tracks. The Impi eight also managed to halt a fantastic rolling maul that had try-time written all over it.

Crusaders had a heavy pack of forwards, suggesting that they might tire as the match wore on, but it was not to be.

The Impi’s loss of captain and number eight Andre Greyvenstein, who limped off six minutes before half-time, was a big blow. Crusaders were also hampered when influential lock forward Loumar Bruwer had to leave the field with an injury four minutes into the second half.

Their match-winning try came from last season’s dangerous Impi outside centre Willem Rheeder, who slashed through the midfield for a great touchdown against his former team-mates.

The Impi’s opportunistic left wing, Ngcebo Masikane, scored a fine individual try to give his side the half-time lead.

The defeat in Durban North meant that the Impi relinquished their position on top of the KZN Premier Division log, but win or lose it would have been the case anyway after defending champions College Rovers overwhelmed Maritzburg Collegians just a few kilometres away.
