Curr family dominate Mtonwane Eco Challenge

2008-07-28 00:00

Mzikayifani Mdladla won the Vryheid 15 km Game Park run leading from gun to tape, which he broke in 57 minutes 52 seconds. Only a sprint finish gave Mdladla’s Boxer clubmate, Bongani Msimango, the edge for second spot ahead of local athlete Xolani Mazibuko, who also earned a 40-49 age category victory.

Lindie van der Merwe was an unexpected winner in the women’s race. Still a junior, and running under a temporary licence, Van der Merwe beat the challenging course over the old wagon trail up Lancaster Hill in 92 minutes 39 seconds.

By the finish at Cecil Emmet Park, she had opened over 400 metres on the more experienced Driekie Black from Biggarsberg Club. Black was the winner in her 40-49 age category with a time of 95:06, however, it was third-placed Leonie Botha who set the foundation for the host club, Vryheid, to win the women’s team prize.

In the Midlands on Sunday, just under 200 runners and walkers lined up for Estcourt Athletics Mtonwane Eco Challenge around the game reserve near Weenen.

Umnanbhiti’s Sazi Ndaba paved the way with a fleet-footed half-marathon win in 67 minutes, while the Natal Carbineer duo of Dumisi Zondi and Sandilie Shezi battled among themselves for the lower podium positions.

If Carbineers were dominant in the men’s race, it was Collegians Harriers — and, more specifically, the Curr family — who took the limelight in the women’s race.

Gillian Curr took race honours in 1:52,25, over 16 minutes clear of her mother, Margaret, with Caren Bishop of Hillcrest Villagers a further 600 metres adrift.
