Currie Cup: Sharks prepare for opener

2013-07-30 00:00

THE Sharks, under their new coaching regime, are attending a training camp on the North Coast this week ahead of the Currie Cup season, which kicks off against the Griquas at King’s Park stadium on August 9.

The following Friday (August 16) they will meet the Golden Lions who will be battle-hardened after their home and away Super Rugby promotion outings against the Southern Kings.

The Currie Cup squad met up with Brendan Venter, who is doubling as new head coach and the Sharks director of rugby, and his two assistants, Brad Macleod-Henderson and Sean Everitt, on Sunday.

The Sharks, who will be without their many Springboks for almost the entire Currie Cup campaign, were set to name their squad yesterday.

They have lost Meyer Bosman and Jandre Marais to French clubs while JP Pietersen and Ryan Kankwoski will see out the year in Japan before returning to the Sharks for next year’s Super Rugby season.

Players expected to return from injury over the next few weeks are centres Tim Whitehead and Frans Steyn, and lock Pieter-Steph du Toit.
