Cut to size

2008-09-30 00:00

IN the battle to unseat Thabo Mbeki, the Jacob Zuma faction has been happy to make use of the puerile utterances of ANCYL president Julius Malema. It is therefore refreshing to hear a senior ANC minister like Zola Skweyiya singling out Malema’s behaviour as “unacceptable” and an “embarrassment” to the party. While the Youth League has been a traditional training ground for future ANC leadership — after all, Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela emerged from it — it is high time that a young hothead like Malema, who has rudely gone way above his station, should be cut down to size and put in his place. The fact that Zuma didn’t do it himself says little for him.
