Cycling death: Bakkie driver knocks down Newcastle sportsman

2013-02-04 00:00

JOHAN Kilian (38) a popular resident from Newcastle is the latest cyclist to become a victim on the roads. Kilian was knocked down by a bakkie on the N11 road leading to Newcastle last week.

He died on the spot. He was riding with his friend Chris Walters on a training session at 6.30 am when the accident occurred. Both men had planned to compete in The Argus cycle race later this year. Renier Stucky, Kilian’s employer said the community was devastated by the loss.

“Johann was a good oke and he was very fit; he enjoyed his squash and his cycling and this will knock his family hard. We all feel terrible for them.”

Stucky said the N11 is a main road and in good condition. “There is often mist in the morning. Nobody can say what happened.”

It is estimated that more than three hundred cyclists are killed every year on the roads due to the negligence of drivers who do not see the cyclists or who do not respect the cyclists’ rights on the road. The cycling community recently was in an uproar after the death of champion mountain biker Burry Stander, who died after crashing into a taxi that turned in front of him.

Cyclesafe KZN, an organisation set up to promote safe cycling, advises drivers to be more aware of the increasing numbers of cyclists on the roads and to give them the same courtesy they would other vehicles. It is recommended that to avoid accidents there is a gap of 1,5 metres between the vehicle and cyclist when overtaking.
