Cycling to Midmar for a purpose

2012-02-11 00:00

MOOOOO-VE over for this cyclist, headed for a dip in the dam at Midmar.

Johannesburg resident Brad Roets, who is competing in the charity leg of this year’s aQuelle Midmar Mile, has cycled from Edenvale in Gauteng to Midmar to raise money and awareness for Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (Choc) — in a cowprint cycling suit.

Speaking to Weekend Witness during a break in his epic journey, he said his friend inspired him into action.

“A group of us always do the 94.7 Highveld Stereo Cycle Challenge in cow suits to raise money for Choc.

“One of the members of that team cycled it while battling cancer and he passed away last year. This inspired me into action because if he could remain fit while battling cancer, there is no reason why a healthy person like me should not achieve something similar,” said the cyclist.

His ride from his Johannesburg home took four days with stops in Standerton, Harrismith, Winterton and finally Midmar.

“The purpose of the ride is to show people that there is more to life than the normal day-to-day problems,” he said.

Roets has swum the 8-Mile before, the charity leg of the Midmar Mile, which comprises eight regular races over the weekend, and said that he was inspired when he swum the event last year alongside a swimmer without legs.

He will be swimming the 8- Mile in a cow print swimsuit — without the udders — and will be raising money for about a month after his swim.
