Cyclists push hard to keep lead

2010-06-28 00:00

SINCE they left the city on June 12, Freedom Challenge cyclists Trevor Ball and Ugene Nel have stayed ahead of the pack and are expected to finish the race late tonight.

The Freedom Challenge, a 2 400 km journey from Pietermaritzburg to Paarl, saw the leaders pass through the Baviaanskloof yesterday. Of the original 37 riders who stared the race, 28 remain in the running. The ambitious pair were forced to rest for a day last week, after they pushed themselves through treacherous terrain for 26 straight hours.

Competitor Alex Harris is reported to be hot on their heels, despite beginning the race three days after them. The frontrunners are planning another 24-hour push to stay ahead.

“Alex must keep chasing. We don’t intend on making it easy for him” said Nel.
